What is Telemedicine?

"Telemedicine is the use of a high quality audio-visual communication software platform linking remote care providers and patients with specialists in areas that are underserved or the need exceeds the capacity. "

Although it sounds modern, even futuristic, the first reference to telemedicine in the medical literature appeared in 1950 (Zundel, 1996), and was the transmission of radiologic images by telephone between West Chester and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a distance of 24 miles. Specialist TeleMed connects specialists with distant patients and caregivers using the most sophisticated computer platform and software available to allow for meaningful and complete interactions between patients and caregivers. By providing access to specialists in areas that are either unavailable, under-served or where the existing specialists are over-utilized, we allow a level of care and interaction that helps redefine the local standard of care. By providing specialist consultations and care, we hope to improve the improve the patient- physician experience, improve diagnostic accuracy and the care delivery, allow for certain patients to be cared for locally without the need for transfer, with improved efficiencies in the delivery of services. In short, STeM defines quality, value-based care.

The software and hardware platform and linkage allows for seamless, face-to-face interaction between the consulting physician and local provider and/or patient, effectively marking a new era in medicine.  We partner with the most sophisticated technology providers in the world bringing you a complete package of physician services and technology.

Our physicians are experts in their chosen fields, which range from neurology to nonoperative neurosurgery to behavioral health. When needed, remote telemedicine consultations can save time and money, and help potentially improve the quality of care delivered locally.

Technology + Specialists = TeleMedicine. Healthcare is rapidly changing. Advancements in modern medicine allow for unprecedented coverage and more complete care to delivered close to home in many cases. We are leading the industry with innovation and fields of service, offering for the first time numerous specialities not previously utilized.

Improved Quality

Telemedicine elevates the level of care available locally by providing specialist telemedicine coverage that is either not available, or not available on a regular basis. Specialist consultations have been shown to improve the diagnostic accuracy and initial management of non-routine medical conditions. Additionally, patients are diagnosed and treated more efficiently which improves outcomes and allows for less expensive interventions in many instances.

Patient Satisfaction

Telemedicine has been shown to result in the equivalent patient satisfaction as traditional face-to-face encounters with physicians. In some instances, patient satisfaction is actually superior due to reduced travel time (and related stress) as well as reduced uncertainty for the patient.

Patient Retention

We help hospitals and hospital systems retain patients by providing telemedicine specialist consultations in your hospital for medical and surgical conditions that are currently being transferred or slowing workflow/dispositions due to a lack of specialty access.

Increased Access to Specialty Care

Best 'available' care is no longer a geographically-restricted term. Our Telemedicine consultation technology allows our specialists to provide support and assistance from wherever they are in the world to any hospital anywhere in the world. Having access to telemedicine specialists allows for the delivery of rapid and concise management and treatment recommendations.

Reduced Cost for Specialty Care

Studies have shown that the total cost, cost per patient and cost per visit were all reduced using telemedicine (Rojas et al., Telemedicine and e-Health, 2008; Craig et al., J of Telemedicine and Telecare, 2000).

Advancing your Standard of Care

Contact with leading specialists gives patients and family confidence that they are receiving the highest possible level of care. Our surgeons use our evidence-based approach and protocol to deliver a conservative and appropriate care plan for the patient in conjunction with the local provider.

What Makes Us Unique

Specialist TeleMed (STeM) expands the options for telemedicine to include individual service lines for General Neurology/TeleStroke and Emergency Psychiatry, as well as non-operative Neurosurgery and Spine.  Additional specialties including Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Urology, Nephrology, ENT, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Cardiology General Surgery/Trauma and Critical Care/ICU are available depending on your unique needs. Infectious Disease, Ophthalmology, Endocrinology and Gastroenterology service lines are being developed for acute care settings where needed, and where it can be safely delivered.

By providing specialist availability where it is limited, inconsistent or not available, we are able to offer a stream-lined solution that is both cost-effective and can help improve the quality of care offered. Staffed by specialists, we provide guidance and expertise to help evaluate and manage atypical, time-consuming, challenging or worrisome conditions in the Emergency Department and inpatient setting when needed.

Our physicians, who have active clinical practices themselves, use our evidence-based approach and protocols to deliver a conservative and appropriate care plan for patients in conjunction with local providers. Whether it is a non-emergent condition where a consultation would be beneficial, an emergent evaluation of a new condition which may occasionally be treated locally, or initial stabilization recommendations for emergent conditions while waiting a transfer, we provide broad access to the appropriate specialists. We also know and appreciate that not all conditions can or should be evaluated and treated using Telemedicine, and the facility and its providers also play significant factors in these decisions.

Lastly, If your facility has an existing telemedicine service we can seamlessly integrate with it, or add additional service lines to your existing telemedicine unit as needed. In the event that a new service is being established we provide turn-key solutions customized to meet your specific needs.

In the 20th century, we had a century where at the beginning of the century, most of the world was agricultural and industry was very primitive. At the end of that century, we had men in orbit, we had been to the moon, we had people with cell phones and colour televisions and the Internet and amazing medical technology of all kinds.

Synergy with Specialists

Specialist TeleMed's primary goal is to improve access to specialty care when needed. Our philosophy is to work synergistically with local and regional specialists ('specialized boots on the ground') to support them in their practice of medicine, whether that is achieved through evaluation of an appropriate patient in the middle of the night by telemedicine, allowing the local specialist an undisturbed night, or during a busy clinic day, allowing the specialist to follow up afterwards. Alternatively, we can provide coverage to areas where there are limited specialists but a need for coverage at certain facilities. We also 'off-load' non-urgent patient care and consultation roles in fully-staffed facilities by acting as a 'first-call' for selected conditions and consultations. Importantly, we see our role as tailor-fitted depending on the needs of the local physicians, facilities and local or regional specialists.

Return On Investment: Creating Value while Elevating Care

  • Reduced number of patient transfers and decreased costs of transfers.

  • Reduced length of hospital stay because of increased diagnostic accuracy and definitive recommendations, which secondarily allows for greater patient volume, and higher per diem DRG payments.

  • Increasingly satisfied patients who are more likely to return for future visits.

  • Fewer 'bounce-backs' secondary to direct specialist communication regarding expectations and plan.

  • Higher Physician retention: providing them the resources to practice high-quality care.

  • Greater efficiency by allowing our specialists to effectively engage with providers and patients in time-consuming cases to allow for a disposition and plan of care that maximizes quality and efficiency.
